Online Compass

Privacy

Online Compass is a static site with no user accounts or location database. Tool calculations run in your browser. The site also loads Google Tag Manager, as described below.

Location

Location access is optional and only requested when you tap a button asking for it. Coordinates are held in memory in your browser tab and used to compute magnetic declination, Qibla direction, sun and moon bearings, location readouts, and GPS speed. The tools do not place coordinates in analytics events, URLs, or local storage. Coordinates are discarded when you close or reload the tab.

Sensor data

Compass headings come from your device's orientation sensors through the browser's standard API. The readings are used to draw the dial and nothing else. They are not recorded or sent anywhere.

Storage

The only thing stored on your device is your light or dark theme preference, kept in local storage so the page does not flash the wrong colours on your next visit. Clearing site data removes it.

Analytics and cookies

The site loads Google Tag Manager to manage site measurement. Google Tag Manager can load measurement tags and may receive technical information such as page URL, browser details, and IP-derived network data. The compass, orientation, and precise location values used by the tools are not sent through Tag Manager by this site. Your browser settings and any consent controls shown on the site govern cookies or storage used by loaded measurement services.

Offline use

A service worker caches the pages and assets so the compass keeps working without a connection. That cache lives on your device and is never uploaded.

Data sources

Magnetic declination is computed from the World Magnetic Model coefficients published by NOAA/NCEI and the British Geological Survey. Those coefficients are bundled into the page at build time, so using the calculator makes no request to NOAA or anyone else.
