Online Speedometer: Live GPS Speed Tracker

Measure the speed reported by your device's location service in km/h, mph, and metres per second. The live speedometer runs in your browser and needs an accurate, changing GPS position.

How this speedometer measures speed

The page uses navigator.geolocation.watchPosition to receive updated location readings. When the device supplies the Geolocation API speed property, the value arrives in metres per second. The tool converts that reading to kilometres per hour or miles per hour without uploading it.

GPS speed is derived from changes in satellite measurements and position over time. A browser cannot force a device to provide speed. Some laptops, tablets, and phones return a position but leave the speed field empty, especially when the device is stationary or relies mainly on Wi-Fi positioning.

A live reading requires movement and a sequence of good fixes. Allow several seconds outdoors before judging the result. Locking the phone, switching apps, battery-saving settings, or background browser limits may pause updates.

  1. 1

    Start the speedometer

Select Start speedometer and allow location access. The browser begins watching for updated positions.

  2. 2

    Move into open sky

Wait outdoors for a stable GPS fix. Speed may remain blank while the device is stationary or still locating.

  3. 3

    Choose your units

Switch between kilometres per hour and miles per hour. Metres per second remains visible as a reference.

km/h vs. mph

One metre per second equals 3.6 km/h and about 2.237 mph. The unit buttons change only the display; both values come from the same device-reported speed. Walking pace is often around a few km/h, while cycling and vehicle speeds are higher, so the display keeps one decimal place for low readings.

Use the unit expected by the road signs, training plan, or activity you are comparing. The tool is a convenient secondary display. It is not a certified instrument and should not replace a vehicle's approved speedometer or safety equipment.

Accuracy and GPS drift

GPS speed can be accurate under open sky, but the browser does not provide a universal speed-accuracy value. The horizontal accuracy shown on the page describes the reported position radius, not a direct error bound for speed. A poor fix, reflected signals between tall buildings, tunnels, heavy tree cover, and indoor use can make the number jump.

At very low speeds, small position changes and sensor noise form a larger share of the measurement. A stationary device may briefly report movement. Wait for the fix to settle and compare a sustained reading rather than one instant. If accuracy remains poor, move to open sky and disable aggressive battery saving for the browser.

You can check the coordinates and their accuracy on My Location. Read how accurate a phone speedometer is before comparing it with another instrument. For direction independent of GPS movement, use the live compass on a compatible phone.

Using it while driving, cycling or running

Mount the phone securely before starting. A driver must not hold, tap, or read this page while the vehicle is moving. Set the unit before departure and let a passenger operate it if interaction is needed. Follow local laws covering phone mounts and displays.

For cycling or running, keep the device where it has a view of the sky and cannot fall. Clothing, bags, and body position can reduce reception. GPS updates also use battery power, so long sessions may benefit from a dedicated fitness device designed for continuous tracking.

This page shows the current value and does not record a route, maximum speed, or trip history. Closing the tab ends the watch and clears the displayed data.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the speedometer show no speed?

The device may not supply a speed value until you are moving with a stable GPS fix. Try outdoors, wait several seconds, and check that location permission is enabled.

Is GPS speed more accurate than a car speedometer?

They measure speed differently and each has limits. This browser reading is not certified and should not replace the vehicle's built-in speedometer.

Does the speedometer save my route?

No. The page displays current location-derived values in the browser and does not build or store a route history.

Can I use this while driving?

Set up and mount the device before moving. Do not hold or operate the page while driving; use a passenger if interaction is needed.
